Team Ireland South East

Meet Elaine & George

Elaine first discovered Water Babies in 2009 while pregnant, thanks to her friend and Water Polo teammate Therese, who co-founded the first Water Babies franchise in Ireland.

From the moment she watched her first Water Babies class, she was hooked and knew that this is what she wanted to do. She qualified as an instructor soon after having her baby and taught classes in Dublin for the next two years.

Swimming has always been a huge part of Elaine and her husband George’s lives. They met through the ESB Swimming Club, and they both played water polo and competed at national and international level.

So in 2012, Elaine and George made the big decision to move from Dublin to Wexford with their four children to launch Water Babies South East.

It was a huge step to leave their families and their swimming life in Dublin and move to Wexford along with their four children who were at that time aged 12,10, 8 and 3.

Starting with just 100 babies and toddlers across Kilkenny, Waterford and Wexford, Elaine and George gradually expanded Water Babies South East into Carlow, Gorey and Tipperary, bringing their passion for swimming to even more families across the South East of Ireland.

Elaine and George now swim over 1100 babies and toddlers each week along with their amazing team Catherine, Marie & Amanda in the Water Babies office and their team of 11 teachers.

Elaine and George’s four children Sean 26, Jennifer 24, Ciarán 22 and Lee 17 are all qualified swimming teachers and pool lifeguards and they have assisted their parents over the years attending at various pools.

What do you love most about running your franchise?

My team, we are such a close group and it wouldn’t be possible without having such wonderful staff who are so passionate about what they do.

Raising our children in a rural setting has been fantastic for them growing up, and while weekends have been our busiest over the years to also have the work life balance to be there during the school holidays and after school hours.

What is your proudest achievement as a Franchisee?

Winning the Most Improved Franchise International Award in 2023.

Five words to describe being a Water Babies Franchisee

Hard Work (but worth it)!

George and I start the day with tea.

Favourite thing about the local area

Baginbun Beach. George would swim there all year round anytime he gets a chance when he is not teaching.

Elaine loves walking around the Baginbun/ Carnivan headland but the water needs to be a bit warmer before she ventures into the sea!
